If a player realizes a doubling of pictures was missed after their turn ended, when they have that "State" card, the player then has missed their opportunity to collect double pictures for that landing space. Any doubling of minus pictures (triple for Kansas) by having that State card, will also be missed if the other players don't catch that player doubling the forfeit of pictures in their State before the next player begins their turn. The “Camera" token cannot be doubled, or tripled if using the "Triple your pictures" card, when landing on the camera space in New Mexico.

DIRECTION CARDS (Optional - variation 2): If the direction cards are used, then place them face down for each player to pick one to determine which direction the player will start their play of the game. If picked, “Start in Chicago” card, you will end on the Santa Monica space. You will follow the NUMBERS on the green mile markers in each landing space. If picked, “Start in L.A. (Santa Monica)” direction card, you will end in Chicago. You will follow the LETTERS on the green mile markers. Do not start anywhere else on the board. The same “last space” rules still apply if ending in Chicago. Stay in the state that you’re in until you come to the next state following the green mile marker direction flow. When going from L.A. to Chicago, the words "entering" each state on a landing space, can be thought of as "leaving" the state.

DETERMINING THE PLAY: At the beginning of play, each player is given a Camera token worth 100 pictures to place in their album pouch. Players roll the dice to see who has the highest number. For any roll tie, those players simply roll again. The player with the HIGHEST number goes first and, also, gets the “SLIDE CARD.” Play will follow clockwise around the table with players guided by the “mile marker NUMBER” in green if traveling from Chicago to L.A.; and guided by the “mile marker LETTER” if traveling from L.A. to Chicago. When landing on a space, a player must read ALOUD what is on the space and the player that rolled the dice follows the direction.
A player with the "SLIDE CARD" can use it anytime during the game, but cannot use it to get past the STOP landing space. Anytime during their turn and after rolling the dice and moving their piece forward they now have the option to move their piece either forward 6 more spaces or back 1 space. The player with the "SLIDE CARD" can use it only once. After the player uses the card, it's turned back in; and immediately the remaining players that have not already had this card will roll for the highest number to obtain the "SLIDE CARD". Play is resumed again.
A lower number rolled is better because you will have more opportunities to “take” or collect more Pictures. During the play, you will land on spaces that will REWARD (+) you with more Pictures or PENALIZE (-) you to forfeit Pictures. No player can ever go below zero in picture total count during the game; but just go to zero and not into a negative score. On the game board, each states total spaces to land on (except for Kansas) relates to the percentage of the total miles that Route 66 had in that state before it was decommissioned in 1985.

You don't have to have the exact number to end your trip to L.A. or Chicago. If the number rolled is higher than the spaces ahead of you, simply put your playing piece on the L.A. or Chicago space and your play in the game has ended. Then determine if you're the first, second, third or fourth to finish and follow the direction given under determining the winner rules when adding up your picture totals.
While traveling Route 66, stay in the color of the state until you enter another state. Picture spaces are out of bounds, no landing on them. When landing on a space with a black and white dotted line between some landing places means there is a choice in direction depending on the text in the space.

THE MOUNTAIN PASS CARD: By landing on a “Mountain Pass” space, the player picks up a “Mountain Pass” card. This card must be used or can be traded with another player for an agreed number of Pictures at any time. There are 3 Mountain Pass spaces on the game board to collect a card. When arriving at the "Mountain Pass", a player gives up the pass and “drives” on through that section of the trip. The play continues clockwise around the table from the player with the "Slide" card that begins the play. Any drawn used card goes to the discard pile. There are no joker cards used in this game, set those aside.

At the beginning of each player's turn, draw a card from the top of the draw pile to bring the number of cards in your had to two. Now you can play one of those two cards to move your playing piece. You only use one card at a time to move your piece then put that card in the discard pile. The number on the card is the amount of spaces you move forward. The Ace card is 1, Jack card is 11, the Queen card is 12. The "King" card would be held in your hand until you use it on another player. Further direction about the King card is below. You don't draw again until the beginning of your next turn.

After the "Slide" card is played by the player that had it, and the current turn has ended, the other three players immediately draw a card from the draw pile and the one with the highest number now gets the "Slide" card. The same procedure is done each time the "Slide" card is played in a turn until each player has had the "Slide" card. The last player not having the card, does not have to draw to get the "Slide" card. Note: There may be games played, where not everybody would get the "Slide" card. You can only have the "Slide" card once per game. Any player having a "Slide" card at the end of the game, forfeits 50 pictures.

The King cards in the deck are used in the play of the game as "Play Again" cards. When player "A" lays down a King card on player "B", before player "B" plays a card from their hand, player "B" will first draw to bring their card count to two. Then player "B" plays both cards, hence "Play Again" for their turn. If player "B" is forced to play a King card(s) because that card is in their hand, then their King card will be used to move their playing piece forward 13 spaces. Player "B" has the choice to decide which card to use first. Player "A" and "B", on their next turn will draw to bring the cards in their hand to two. Any player having a King "Play Again" card at the end of the game (reaching either L.A. or Chicago landing space), forfeits 50 pictures.

The Queen cards are the "Merge Onto The Freeway" cards, representing traveling fast. These are given out in the same way as the King cards at the beginning of another players turn. The player receiving a Queen card must move their playing piece forward 12 spaces without drawing a card or using a card in their hand. On their next turn, they will draw to bring their cards to two. Any player having a "Merge Onto The Freeway" card at the end of the game, forfeits 50 pictures.

When landing on the "Speeding Ticket" space, you draw the top card from the draw pile and this number then determines the speeding fine.
