ROUTE 66
ANNIVERSARY EDITION

Rules of play: (Read the bold print for a quick summary)

CONTENTS: Game board; 100 “Picture” tokens (each are worth 25 pictures); 25 white tokens (each are worth 50 pictures); 10 “Camera black tokens” (Each are worth 100 pictures); dice; 4 player pieces; 1 open box to hold Picture tokens during play; 4 “Picture Album Pouch” (small envelopes) for collecting pictures. Also, including the following cards;  "Pie & Coffee", "Mountain Pass", "Triple Your Pictures", "Chicago to L.A.", "L.A. to Chicago", "Rules at a Glance", "Slide", "State Colors", and 8 "State" cards.  Also, includes a plastic bag for storing the game pieces, a plastic bag for storing all tokens, and a large plastic bag for storing all contents together from the envelope. This game is for 2–4 players, great for all ages 14 + Warning: contains small parts: not for children. (Note: for lost picture tokens, you can substitute pennies, nickels, or dimes).

SET UP: Fold the box and place in the center of game board, put all tokens in the box. For a shorter height of the box, it can be trimmed before assembled. To begin, place your pawn at the Chicago start corner square (or if playing the option of starting in L.A. then start in the Santa Monica corner square) and roll the dice.  Then move your piece the amount showing on the dice.  A landing space showing a + number, is what type of picture token you will pick up from the box of tokens in the center of the game board.  A - number is what pictures you would forfeit.  When collecting picture tokens, put them in your Album Pouch. Decide who gets which color player piece, separate State, Direction, Mountain Pass, Triple Your Space, Slide Card and Pie & Coffee cards. One person is designated to be the keeper of the cards for the length of the game. Warning: Small pieces can be a choking hazard for small children.

THE OBJECT OF THE GAME: Is to “Take” or collect pictures by landing on the game spaces as you travel Route 66. The numbers of 25, 50 or 100 in the landing spaces, is the  denomination of picture tokens to collect.  Your “The Mother Road” journey will take you through 8 states, IL, MO, KS, OK, TX, NM, AZ, and CA. Having fun and spending more time on the road will allow you to gather more pictures. This game is not a race to the end. After all the players have reached the “Santa Monica End of the Trail” (or final space in Chicago), convert each camera token to 4 pictures tokens. The player who has “taken” or collected the highest number of Pictures during their Route 66 trip is determined the winner!

STATE CARDS (Optional): If the state cards are used, then place them face down and have each player pick one of them. The player gets to double the “Pictures” amount for each landing space in that state only. The doubling also applies when losing “Picture tokens.” Kansas is triple the picture amount. The “Camera token” cannot be doubled when landing on the camera space.

DIRECTION CARDS (Optional): If the direction cards are used, then place them face down for each player to pick one to determine which direction the player will start their play of the game. If picked, “Start in Chicago” card, you will end on the Santa Monica space. You will follow the NUMBERS on the green mile markers in each landing space. If picked, “Start in L.A. (Santa Monica)” direction card, you will end in Chicago. You will follow the LETTERS in the green mile markers. Do not start anywhere else on the board. The same “last space” rules still apply if ending in Chicago. Stay in the state that you’re in until you come to the next state following the green mile marker direction flow.

DETERMINING THE PLAY: Each player is given a Camera token worth 100 pictures to place in their album pouch. Players roll the dice to see who has the highest number. For any roll tie, those players simply roll again. The player with the HIGHEST number goes first and, also, gets the “SLIDE CARD.” Play will follow clockwise around the table with players guided by the “mile marker NUMBER” in green if traveling from Chicago to L.A.; and guided by the “mile marker LETTER” if traveling from L.A. to Chicago. When landing on a space, a player must read ALOUD what is on the space and the player that rolled the dice follows the direction.
A player with the SLIDE CARD can use it anytime during the game, but cannot use it to get past the STOP landing space. Anytime during their turn and after rolling the dice and moving their piece forward they now have the option to move their piece either forward 6 more spaces or back 1 space. The player with the SLIDE CARD can use it only once. After that player uses the card, it's turned back in; and immediately the remaining players that have not already had this card will roll for the highest number to obtain the SLIDE CARD. Play is resumed again.
A lower number rolled is better because you will have more opportunities to “take” or collect more Pictures. During the play, you will land on spaces that will REWARD (+) you with more Pictures or PENALIZE (-) you to forfeit Pictures. No player can ever go below zero in picture total count during the game; but just go to zero and not into a negative score. On the game board, each states total spaces to land on (except for Kansas) relates to the percentage of the total miles that Route 66 had in that state before it was decommissioned in 1985.
While traveling Route 66, stay in the color of the state until you enter another state. Picture spaces are out of bounds, no landing on them. When landing on a space with a black and white dotted line between some landing places means there is a choice in direction depending on the text in the space.

THE MOUNTAIN PASS CARD: By landing on a “Mountain Pass” space, the player picks up a “Mountain Pass” card. This card must be used or can be traded with another player for an agreed number of Pictures at any time. There are 3 Mountain Pass spaces on the game board to collect a card. When arriving at the Mountain Pass, a player gives up the pass and “drives” on through that section of the trip. It connects you to previous spaces that you had already passed, giving you the opportunity to acquire more pictures. You cannot go through the Pass (brown spaces) without having a Mountain Pass card. At the end of your trip if you still have a Mountain Pass card, you forfeit 50 pictures.

TRIPLE YOUR PICTURES CARD: By landing on a “Triple your pictures” card space, the player picks up a “Triple Your Pictures” card. There are 2 spaces to collect this card and is used on any space during your turn to triple the number of pictures you “take.” You cannot triple a “Double Your Pictures” state color. You can choose “Triple Your Pictures” card in a “Double Your Pictures” state, but not both. This card cannot be traded and is used once per player, then it is turned back in to be made available to be picked up by another player landing on a “Triple Your Pictures” space. This card cannot be used on the “Camera Token” landing space in New Mexico.

SPEEDING FINE: Roll dice: numbers 1-3: no fine, numbers 4-7: pay a 25 picture token to be put back into the box in the center of the game board. And numbers 8-12: pay 50 picture tokens to be put back into the same box.

INTERACTIVE SPACE: When landing on this space, the player tells a 30-second story about a traveling adventure or situation. Keep it to 30 seconds.

TORNADO WATCH: Every player must stop at the “Tornado Watch” space and end their turn. Players must stop at this space no matter what direction they are traveling and regardless of the amount left to move on the roll from the dice. Play is resumed on their next turn.

ARRIVING AT THE “END OF THE ROAD” SPACE: Chicago to L.A. (if following the numbered mile markers) OR L.A. (Santa Monica) to Chicago (if following the alpha letters): Being last to arrive at the Santa Monica “End of the Road” space (or Chicago if the play is reversed) doesn’t mean you lose the game. The FIRST player to finish or arrive at the last space, LOSES 50 Pictures. The SECOND player to finish, LOSES 50 Pictures. The THIRD player to finish LOSES 25 Pictures. The very last player to get to the L.A. (Santa Monica), (or Chicago) space is rewarded with 50 Pictures because they spent more time on Route 66, thus having more fun. If you’re still holding a “Triple Your Pictures” or “Mountain Pass” card at this time, you lose 50 pictures per card.

DETERMINING THE WINNER: Each player totals their Pictures tokens collected during the trip (including converting camera tokens to pictures). The player with the HIGHEST Picture total count is the Cantokmi Route 66 – Anniversary Edition game winner! The player with the LOWEST Picture total have to “buy” (give) the winner, a “Pie & Coffee” card. Consideration for the next game; the player with the lowest picture total count can start with two Camera tokens instead of one.

(FYI:  If wanting the picture token box sides to be shorter, then before assembling the box, while flat, use scissors to cut the amount off that you prefer.  Also, you can place a sturdy piece of paper, cut to fit, in the bottom of the box to help hold the picture tokens in the box while playing the game. For any lost picture tokens, you can substitute pennies, nickels or dimes.  For any lost or damaged cards, you can print out more cards at the bottom portion of the rules page).

This game’s flat design means it can be put into your suitcase while traveling. Have fun and enjoy traveling Route 66!
